Hummingbirds and bears!

by Lynn Ckonjevic

We have a hummingbird feeder hanging from a short limb of a pine tree right in front of our porch. It is so much fun watching these little jewels of nature flit in and about our yard! One afternoon I had just taken a shower and was getting ready for work when my boyfriend quietly told me to come out and watch what was going on. A bear was about three feet up our tree and was swatting the hummingbird feeder. He/she would try and catch the sugar water in it's mouth as the feeder would swing back and forth! The bear had the sticky sugar water all over his head and paws! He finally swatted the feeder to the ground and gave it a good cleaning. I thought that I would have to replace the feeder but I was able to put it back together again. I guess I am going to have to find a bear proof area to hang the feeder next spring! What fun nature is!
