A Midnight Blue Humming Bird

by Vrunda
(Sohar, Oman)

I call him Mr. Blue.....we live in Sohar, Oman; very hot these days.......and this guy from four days a regular visitor to my small green patch in my balcony....comes at 11 and stays till 3... peak hot hours.....he sits on the same vine plant.... sometimes shares it with a Sparrow......I see him sucking the vine stalk....eating small ants and humming in his sweet voice.
I love to spend my time watching him, with my cup of coffee.... when he wants some nectar...he flies to the flowering shrubs next to the balcony.....and he is back in a jiffy...when I look at him...my thought is...yes..live for the moment and savor the sweetness.

Live for the moment and savor the sweetness. That's what we don't do often enough and you are right. Hummingbirds do remind us to savor the sweetness of life. They certainly savor the sweetness of the nectar.Don't they? You posted an interesting picture too.

Lovely photo but a hummingbird will not die if you stop feeding them nectar. They find nectar from flowers. What do you think they do in the North during migration before they arrive at the feeders?
It is true that hummingbirds live on the edge of starvation. They have such a fast metabolism that they eat all day.I heard that they eat from 1000 flowers a day. So the nectar at feeders is a great treat for them not something they depend on that much.I
So go ahead and hang some feeders. You will help the hummingbirds and yourself too.You will be able to watch the beautiful hummingbirds.I envy you.Brazil has so many hummingbirds that we don't see here.

Wonderful!

In Brazil many people put out sugar water for the hummingbirds. I never did because I'd heard that if their sugar source disappears, they can die, too much responsibility!

MODERATOR'S COMMENT: Studies have shown that if someone has been supplying nectar in hummingbird feeders and stops the supply, hummingbirds will easily find a nectar source from flowers.
