The sweet sound song echoes alive

bright wings open to catch the air

up up up

lost in the clouds

up through fog

diving deeper than the ocean

turning quicker than a storm

Light wings

by Jerrin Mathew
(C-174 S-4 SCH no.78 Vijaynagar, Indore, Madhya Pradesh,India)

They are in blue, red, yellow and green,
during spring season it can be seen.
It can move both to and fro,
they have amazing features to show.
Having small and slight wings,
melodiously Hummingbird sings.
Having a long pointed beak,
nectar is what they always seek.
Flying around like a charter,
around the sky they get scatter.
By sweetness Hummingbird get itself feed,
nevertheless, it is an amazing bird indeed.
Juicy flower is all that Hummingbird needs,
and to get it enough are,
its work ,its beauty and its deeds.
Seeing Hummingbird in flowers and sky,
I never wanted to say them bye,
in childhood this was the question of my,
but as i grew up i understood why,
because in season of winter,
they cannot be warmth and fly.
But in summer again they come in a group,
dancing in the sky as a troop,
to continue their work simultaneously,
to continue their hum melodiously.

by Ashleigh R - age 11
(Collinsville, OK, USA)

Hummingbird, Hummingbird I see you fly.
Hummingbird, Hummingbird in the sky.
Forwards, backwards, side to side.
Through the air you glide.
I wish you would linger, I wish you would stay.
But off you go, on your way.
Goodbye, Goodbye I yell to you.
When you will return, I have no clue.

Most beautiful hummingbird

by Jerrin Mathew ,AGE12
(C-174 S-4 SCH no.78 Vijaynagar, Indore, Madhya Pradesh,India)

They climb up to their mountains,
and row in the joy of fountains.
They have wings, need to be observed under lens,
and have name with a noun and a tense.
They are the most beautiful creature in the world,
and they are the most beautiful hummingbird.

They detect different types of savors,
and come to different types of flowers.
They are so small but they are so good,
and can be found in large numbers in wood.
They are the most beautiful creature in the world,
and they are the most beautiful hummingbird.

They are very very light,
and look awesome when sun is bright.
They always come together in groups of flight,
and create for us an amazing sight.
They are the most beautiful creature in the world,
and they are the most beautiful hummingbird.

Once I see you with my eyes,
You leave me no doubt that you are so marvelous.
A bird like you,
So little yet amazing.
One second I see you,
The next you're gone.
Not there for a picture,
But there in my heart!

Hummingbird

by Autumn K. AGE 10
(Marshall,IL,USA)

I just saw a humming bird,
Whispering a humble word.
You say, "no, that's so absurd,
to be humbled by a bird,
let alone it whisper words".
Delusional as it may seem,
This bird it whispered things to me.
Said, "take it slow" with humming wings.
"Abolish all unneeded things".
Said, "life is now" as it zoomed by,
"Without this nectar life'd be dry"..
said, "take a drink and take it slow,
let it sit then let it flow.
Tickle your tongue, and soft your humm,
Simplicity will keep you young".

The Iridescent Angel By: Elise age 12

by Elise F.
(Chevy Chase, MD, USA)

My heart beat matches the beat of his wings
Fast like lightning and when a bee stings
Shimmering feathers, like the light in my eye
Gleaming like the sun, blazing in the sky
A beak so finely shaped, it's perfection
No flower will ever face rejection
Radiant colors, rainbow, iridescent
Only one word fits; luminescent
Here I am face to face
In a exquisite garden, an alluring place
With a dazzling beast, so flawless, so pure
You're sure to be awestruck, let's hope there's a cure.

But you are no larger than a baseball, you feel helpless but you look deep down inside of you and you know that you're just as important as everybody else. You are a colorfull, fast, humming bird and you know nobody can take that away from you. You are unique and that makes you just as powerful. You are a hummingbird. You are small but powerful.

Something else behind the hedgerows

by Freya age 10
(Christchurch, New Zealand)

As I sweep the world behind the hedgerows
I became a hummingbird
I cut the air
I strike the clouds
My feathers shine
My feathers patter like rain
Smoothing my body
A lake of pure silk
Yet softer than silk
Flying through the sky
I love being a hummingbird
I was created by love
A strong power
Magic is strong
I am special
I see the world differently now
Rubbish and smoke thats all it is
So I went somewhere else
A different world
Magic behind the hedgerows
Where I became a hummingbird
Trilling music making everything better
My special occupation
As a hummingbird

Fiery Colors

by Ian Lockwood age 11
(Papua New Guinea)

Like a crown of jewels he sparkles,
Fiery colors, reflecting sunlight.
Bright and fast like fireworks
An aurora in the summer.

His humming is like a melody
Muffled, he hovers in foliage to find flowers,
To sip them and regain precious energy.
Gracefully gliding wings, swiftly race in a figure eight.

He can travel straight and not, in all directions.
So intricate, and fluttering with great accuracy,
The hummingbird zips around in haste,
His size surprising for his many capabilities.

Together With The Hummingbirds - A prose poem

by Kathleen King Age 11
(Christchurch, New Zealand)

i. Swinging
So there I was. Time ticking by, and I was hanging by my legs from the swing in our backyard. At least, I think I was. The sun beat down on my back, a non-stop rhythm. A rhythm of happiness, sunshine, life. Swinging slowly through the trees, wind whipping through my hair. I am not happy. I am not content. Somehow, I am not me. Hummingbirds are chatting softly throughout the trees, helping me to remember that I am here. I am not gone. Not yet.

ii. Hiding
So here I am. Locked in a dark, dusty room, with pear juice dribbling down my chin. Hiding. My life depends on it. Hidden away under a bed, my entire family tucked in. We are like dolls in a dollhouse, all 25 of us crammed in. Aunties, uncles, cousins, grandparents. We are hiding, hungry, dirty and cold. I cannot remember what happiness feels like. Somewhere, I hear a hummingbird calling.

iii. Together
So here we are. Swinging in the backyard, hiding from the clutches of no more. The clutches that have tried so many times to collect us. We are together. Not safe, but not in danger. We are together. Hummingbirds are calling, joining us together. Here we are.

Incredible Hummingbird

by Jerrin Mathew
(C-174 S-4 SCH no.78 Vijaynagar, Indore, Madhya Pradesh,India)

We are hummingbird which no one can hold,
we have wings like ruby, diamond, emerald and gold,
to sing the praise for him nature told,
and we sing by having our sing flutter and fold,
we are hummingbird which no one can hold.

We are hummingbird flying over every flower,
we can fly over the tallest tower,
we are small we have high speed power,
and so we can cross the whole world in half and hour,
we are hummingbird flying over every flower.

We are hummingbird having a large pointed beak,
we are happy creatures we never meek,
cold for us is like Everest's peak,
sweet nectar of flower is what we seek,
we are hummingbird having a large pointed beak.

Splash of Color

by Isaac Lockwood age 6
(Papua New Guinea)

Hummingbird you are an interesting creature.
When you go to flowers, you dart past.
You arrive and then,
You stick your beak inside at last.

When you suck out all the nectar
If a bug lives in there too
Then you swallow your prey whole
It is what you have to do.

You are a little fellow and your wings
Beat one hundred times a minute.
It uses so much energy,
Your belly needs lots of nectar in it!

I only wish there were more of you.
Red, purple, green and blue -
Like an artist used his brush
And splashed color on my world.

my favorite Hummingbird

by Jerrin Mathew ,AGE12
(C-174 S-4 SCH no.78 Vijaynagar, Indore, Madhya Pradesh,India)

She is lightning beauty of all times,
she hums and sings with rhymes.
She is the smallest of all,
she is found during spring,
and during season when leaves get fall.
Flying together in sky as a flock,
at the door of every flower they knock.
Looks awesome when sunlight is combined,
just in a look can change our mind.
Over every flower they fly,
everyone wants to say them hi.
I know all that glitters is not gold,
but seeing them shining ,
My happiness and joy I cannot hold.
whenever I see she is always in glee,
She is the most beautiful bird for me.
I am waiting for a chance to meet,
but unfortunately she doesn't come in my city street.
That's why every year i walk to my village,
for taking her beautiful image.
She's everyone's favorite bird,
she is all around the world ,
she is my favorite humming bird.

Fluttering over wings

by Jerrin Mathew
(C-174 S-4 SCH no.78 Vijaynagar, Indore, Madhya Pradesh,India)

Have you ever seen hummingbird over flower,
if yes ,then today you are a nature lover.
have you ever seen hummingbird flying,
then you will never forget it till dying.

Every time fluttering over wings,
by humming this bird sings.
They always have satisfying evening,
and other day begins refreshing.

Humming in season of spring and autumn,
rejoicing in deep heart's bottom.
Perfect in noon, always in mood,
in taking nectar from flower that stood.

But they have to go back in cold,
for they are not so much bold.
they go back in winter, get back in sum (summer),
with their great melodious hum .

Happiest creature

by Jerrin Mathew
(C-174,S-4,SCH.NO.-78,Vijaynagar,Indore,Madhya Pradesh,INDIA)

Hummingbird sitting over flowers,
hummingbird singing in sunshine,
searching for the nectar wine,
searching for it hours and hours.

Hummingbird is the most beautiful living,
how wonderful it is when it starts humming,
so small but happy and hardworking ,
in taking juice of flowers and pollinating.

With fluttering wing and a pointed beak,
they are happy and never they meek,
but they have to go in weather of cold,
for weather of winter they can't hold.

But again refreshed they come back in summers,
and they continue their work by hummers,
they are the most beautiful thing in nature,
they are the happiest creature.

Bright feathers,

Long Beak,

Large flowers

He seeks.

Little as can be.

Working all day,

Flapping his wings

Without a delay.

Spreading pollen all around,

Not making much sound.

Piercing a flower,

With much power.

The smallest you will ever see.

King of the Sky

by Anya Ambarish
(Sterling, VA)

Your wings a quick show plane
Twisting to the sky
A constant beat they keep
Hovering in the pushy wind
Much energy these birds have
Spinning up and down in the air
Almost hanging in the sky
To hummingbirds gravity does not apply
Swift as a cheetah
Only in the air
On land those stubby legs
Certainly don’t go far
The sky is your home
The Clouds your streets
You really are
The king of the sky

Wings of Grace

by Zack Clement

I sit, at my table, when a blur catches my eye,
It's a hummingbird, reaching for the sky,
I see those beautiful Wings of Grace.

I swim in a pool, streaking blue,
When all of a sudden, I see something new,
It's those wonderful Wings of Grace.

I walk to school, sad and alone
When I see a sight that is very well known,
The ultimate, majestic Wings of Grace.

First a tiny blur
Then the solid shape

How are you so beautiful?

Fly away

Hummentments

by Jerrin Mathew
(C-174,S-4,SCH.NO.-78,Vijaynagar,Indore,Madhya Pradesh,INDIA)

While flying they flutter their wings,
while flying hummingbird sings.
What to tell about this tiny creatures,
it is attracted by all who see its features.

A hummingbird over a flower how beautiful,
clusters of them together how wonderful.
How much we praise about them that much is less,
see with what beautiful friends god has blessed.

See hummingbird in the season of spring,
with large pointed beak and fluttering wings.
About this creature what can i say ,
who frames the beauty which no one can pay.

In its wings hummingbird has less feathers ,
that's why it needs sunny weather.
What message does hummingbird give?
size doesn't matter it is life you live.

The Hum of the Hummingbird

by Lauren Lindberg
(Cudahy, WI, USA)

The morning sun rises, and dew is on the ground,
but yet the hummingbirds flutter all around.
Looking for the sweet nectar juice that they so desire,
calming and soothing, just like a warm fire.
As they flap their wings at a fascinating speed,
they're looking for a delicious morning feed.
As I sit relaxed, watching they're wings that are blurred,
I hear the hum of the hummingbird.
Peaceful and delicate, these little, tiny creatures,
They suck nectar out of the feeder from a tiny beak, one of many, many features.
The sun now rising higher and higher,
the little bird looks as if it will never tire.
Friends join this lonely fellow,
their hum sounding gentle, just like a cello.
And as they zoom, and fly away
the hum of the hummingbird stays with me all day.

BIRD OF MANY COLORS

by Madeline Page Age 12
(7th grade Boise, ID,USA)

Swirling, through the air you are a bird of many colors. You are graceful, fast as the speed of light, your colors mesh into a hurricane of brilliance. You, and you alone are a bird of many colors. Nobody, and I mean nobody can change that, they can try with the might of a Tiger, but will appear as a slight bunny chasing after a carrot hung on a string while running on a treadmill. As you drink out of the sweet nectar provided by a florescent pink flower, you wonder what is so special about I, a small helpless species? There is many wondrous items belonging to a Humming Bird such as yourself. You are quick, clever, majestic, and most of all a beautiful bird of many colors.

ode to my dream bird

by Jerrin Mathew ,AGE12
(C-174 S-4 SCH no.78 Vijaynagar, Indore, Madhya Pradesh,India)

When I close my eyes softly it appears,
with golden color wings and long pointed beak,
over flowers blue, yellow and green,
and look thinking it was real,
I woke up from my dream.

It is my dream bird in this dreamworld,
over flowers they land upon,
chasing the sky,
like a troop of dancers,
they dance, hum and fly.

when sun shines with radiant rays
Hummingbird goes for work,
for they need the sweetest flower,
and I wanted but never got chance,
to see them dancing in natural shower.

With vibrating sound all around,
gleaming and glittering in my village,
they take away my attention,
and when I am in a deep worry,
they help me to throw away tension.

Thank you god,for making this beautiful creature,
they are attracted by colorful flowers,
and they make us attract,
but they go back in cold winter,
that is a sorrowful fact.

When whole world is busy with their work,
who has few minute time to see,
all this little things,
and who has time to hear,
when my dream bird sings.

That's why I have written this poem,
to make people know, that there should be time,
to see such pleasure,
because one day you have to go,
and then where will be your treasure.

Fascinating Hummingbird

by Abril Rodriguez Diaz age 10
(Irvine, California, USA)

Fascinating Hummingbird

Your wings are flashy, vivid, and colorful

Magnificent hues, stunning and beautiful

Long tongue used to drink nectar from flowers

You eat a massive amount of food each hour

You are beautiful, a miracle

Brilliant and magical

A brave little bird, you keep your home safe and well

Any enemy is chased away as far as I can tell

Unlike other birds you are extremely small

But size doesn’t matter; your tiny heart inside is like a special piece of gold

Your thin beak like a needle, sparkling in the sun

Drinking nectar from plentiful flowers, is better than a cinnamon bun

Quick as lightning those tiny wings flicker

Appearing to be still as stone

The ways of the humming bird

by Bianca age 11

Humming bird,humming bird
Flying high and soaring through the sky
Feathers of orange,green,and yellow
They are small but fast
At the end of the day they get a rest at last
They fly away
And come back another day
As they say bye
They zoom to the sky
And go to migrate

Little Hummingbird

by Jerrin Mathew ,AGE12
(C-174 S-4 SCH no.78 Vijaynagar, Indore, Madhya Pradesh,India)

Straight forward of my room window,
over the national highway,
high above my shelter,
flocks of them sit day by day,
their shinning neck and pointed beak,
and little tripping feet,
by fluttering wings twinkling eyes,
humming voices low and sweet.
In childhood games and meetings,
to them I always see,
for these little humming friends,
are always very close to me.
They come to human feeders,
quick are they to feel my word,
I dedicate my poem for them,
to my hummingbird readers.
Just in small flight, chasing sky,
and goes out from my village lane,
its time to say them goodbye,
hum always come again.

Really a Hummingbird

by Paige Bowman Age 10
(New Zealand)

I have no intention
of being a hummingbird
anymore.

I have become a gymnast.

In the gym I saw a girl
whose hair swooped around
her body like my wings.

Her leotard glossy as my feathers
folded around her like a
coat.

I stayed up all night crafting the
finest hands and feet.
The distal interphalangeal joint
confused me most.

In no time at all my hands twisted
and tangled into the deep blossoms
and my feet became cut and crusted
from the knobbly branches.

Gymnastics is no longer my passion.
The language does not agree with
my hummingbird body.

I do not need gymnastics.
In my mind
I am the real gymnast.

Birds flashing like gems

by Sara age 11
(459 Hughes dr., Kingsley, Michigan 49649)

A jewel flits through the air
Bright colors clashing against the green leaves
Birds flashing like gems float around a flower
Darting in and out
Their bright colors; red, green, brown, yellow
swirl around the sky
As they hover sipping nectar
Against the blue, blue sky

Hummingbird Majesty

by Savannah Jones
(Maricopa, AZ USA)

Hummingbird majesty
Tiny wings beat a drum
Easing my pain with a steady hum
This is hummingbird majesty

Hummingbird majesty
Shimmery iridescent feathers
Lying one on top of the other
This is hummingbird majesty

Hummingbird majesty
In these few moments when a hummingbird
Stops to rest on a swaying tree branch
this is hummingbird majesty

The secrets of a Hummingbird

by Nikhil - Age 8
(Texas)

Hummingbird, Hummingbird

Flapping away indefinitely.

Your eggs in the nest are so bland,

While you grow out to be so grand.

Hummingbird Hummingbird

Whispering in the flowers ear,

Searching for the sweet nectar.

Oh Hummingbird Hummingbird

Sitting on the old oak tree,

Will you share your splendiferous secrets with me?

My Favorite Hummingbird

by Makendra, Age 6
(Bristol, CT)

Hummingbird on the the flowers,
I like to sit and watch for hours.
I like to see the green and red,
As you are flying, getting fed.
You are so quick, you are so fast,
You are a blur as you fly past.
I wish you would stay forever,
But you must travel to warmer weather.
I will see you again next spring,
You will hum and I will sing!

Most beautiful hummingbird

by Jerrin Mathew
(C-174 S-4 SCH no.78 Vijaynagar, Indore, Madhya Pradesh,India)

"A Rhythmic Individual"

by Marissa Cheslock
(Carmel, IN, USA)

Fluttering, Soaring.
Pecking, Soaring.
Oh! How graceful!
The intensity blinding
the eyes of any creature.
Simple, Shy.
Oh, the many things
a Hummingbird could be.
