The Pretty Hummingbird

by Sarah
(Waterville, Maine)

The hummer named Wendy
had a nest in a tree.
Her baby was Cassie.
She was small as a bee.

Day in and day out
they eat out of flowers.
The nectar is yummy.
It takes them many hours

They are pretty and fast
as they zoom here and there.
Their life is like magic,
they don't have a care.

Hovering Bird

by Karla Elena Gonzalez
(San Diego CA 4862 Logan Ave. Apt. 204)

I am the tiniest bird in the world.

I flap my wings 80 times per second.

I can fly right, left, up, backwards and even upside down.

I can hover by flapping my wings in a horizontal 8 pattern.

I can't smell.

I have the largest brain of all birds.

I have more than 325 species.

I am the only bird whose predator is an insect.

I eat 3 times the weight of my body each day.

I am capable of living more than a decade.

I am a Hummingbird!

Divine Hummingbird

by Ariel Farhat
(Anaheim,CA.)

Hummingbird Hummingbird lift your wings and soar.
When they flap they roar.
Hummingbird Hummingbird as you fly say hello to the sky.
Bolt like lightning, flash, then dash.
Hummingbird Hummingbird in the tree
sheen your colors fill everyone with glee.
Land on a flower, and balance then sip.
Don’t fret for you won’t bite your lip, for you are too graceful.
For you can fly, for you can see the sky and will never die.
Zip and flip, graceful hummingbird.
Do some tricks and puff up proudly.
Everyone will notice your bold colors that glimmer shimmer and shine.
To see you fly, around my eyes, makes me feel divine.

Oh hummingbird of divine beauty
Your wings brush the air like a gentle breeze on a crisp summer day
You eat of pollen with a beak so long, so delicate
Your vibrant color shows in a blur of beauty
Flash by fast beating your wings to keep you aloft
Show yourself to the world
Oh hummingbird of divine beauty

My one true love

by Katie Le
(Virginia)

O' what is this beautiful voice?

O' this voice is my one true love

I will search day and night

Night and day to find that beautiful voice

I'm restless, and I still haven't found that voice

But wait! That voice, it's back!

"Go, go to it now" My senses tell me

I've found the voice I've been looking for!

O' my love is an intelligent hummingbird

Yes, this is true love indeed

pretty hummingbird

by Jenny Darling age seven
(Las Vegas, NV USA)

Today I saw a hummingbird, it was lovely as can be.
If you ever saw a hummingbird I think you would agree.
I marvel at his colors, such a pretty sheen,
He reminds me of a rainbow, yellow blue and green.
He visits flowers one by one and hovers by and by,
And sips the nectar oh so sweet, like a butterfly.
His wings he flaps so rapidly one can barely see,
He flies not like the other birds but like a bumblebee.

The Mysterious Buzz

by Min Su Age 12
(Charlottesville, VA, USA)

A flutter and hum in the sky,
What could it ever be?
A swoop, a dive, then it is gone.
Maybe it’s here for me.

Could it be a fly or a bird?
A faint buzz fills my ears.
Maybe it is a bumblebee.
What’s this sound that I hear?

A flash of color against blue,
A shock for me to see.
What could this colorful thing be?
This is perplexing me.

And so I search up on ‘Google,’
Bright, beautiful, and buzz.
The results show a hummingbird.
Of course, that’s what it was!

And so outside I go once more,
To meet up with this bird,
A speck that is still important.
The graceful hummingbird.

I know the smallest bird of all
Do you know smallest bird of all?
It's known as the Humming bird
Because it makes a humming sound!

The lightest bird
In the world,
Flying forward
And even backward
The most talented
Bird of all
Of course it's known
As Humming bird.

Flapping it's wings
As fast as possible
Going at a speed of
Racing Car
If it's small
Let it be
Because it is the

A Humming Bird

by Sarah Nautiyal
(New Delhi;Delhi;India)

I was eating curd
And guess what I herd,
A sound of a humming bird.

It was not able to fly
I too herd her cry,
It was in a position to die.

I ran to home and bought the first-aid box
Instead of medicine I found socks.

Then again I ran and bought the cream
While applying it began to scream.

It stayed my home for 40 hours
By resting it got so much powers.

The day come when I said her bye,
When she went I took a sigh.

Hummingbirds Don't Hum

by Dua
(Irving, TX )

Why are hummingbirds called hummingbirds,
If they can't even hum?
That fact-less word is so sad,
the hummingbirds are glum.
Alas, Alas! For they shall see,
they are not meant to be,
called hummingbirds.

The Journey of the Humming Bird

by Isabel Sethi age 12
(5 Mcknight Court Cranbury 08512 NJ USA)

The sun peeks its head over the horizon
Bathing the Earth with its warmth
Rays of light shine on delicate flowers
Their petals weighed down by droplets of sparkling diamonds
Set in flames by the burning blaze of light high above
The tiny bird beats its fragile wings with relish
Only a tiny hum can be heard
All that is seen is an iridescent blur as it zips from one flower to the next
The bird dips its head gently so its slender beak reaches into the tubular flower
To drink greedily the sweet nectar hidden within the blossom
But soon the warm hazy days turn to a gelid winter
The colorful birds are no longer seen
Not long after
The snow soon dissolves revealing the life beneath the frost
And the vibrant bird will be back from its long trip
Ready to start a new life

True Strength

by Finnley Brakke age 11
(Kailua, HI)

I am walking through a forest. Yet it is not really a forest.
All of the trees have been cut down. The streams have stopped flowing. The air seems gloomy and sad.
Even though there are no trees to provide shade, I cannot feel the sunlight.
I get to the center of the forest and begin to feel an aura of hope.
I hear the gentle rustle of a stream, before I see it. I know that it can't be true, but there it is, a beautiful stream that leads to a waterfall. Atop the water, glides a hummingbird, unaffected by the changes. This lone bird has stayed strong and endured. When all of the others were gone, he remained.
Behind the stream a single tree stood alone. It was covered in moss and dripping from water.
Inside the tree I noticed a smaller hummingbird. This one still seemed strong, but it also still had its innocence because it had not yet had to find out what true strength is.
Suddenly, right next to the tree, a small sprout appeared, and I was reminded of something that I had long forgotten. You are never alone, and that is why we must always have hope. There is always someone who will come to your rescue if you just hold on.
And I left the forest, remembering the hummingbird, and knowing that no matter what happens, I must always stay strong, just like the hummingbird.

sweet hummingbird

by shanmughapriya age 12
(munnar,kerala,india)

My mind is abuzz,
Like a hummingbird does.
It can't be still,
And it was my will
To make everything so,
Because how will I know
The outer limits of my essence
Without spiritual lessons?
Self-taught, fear not,
Happiness is sought
Through a curious burn.
The lessons I learn
From engaging my mind,
Is that I am not blind
To tuning into frequencies,
And avoiding delinquencies
With each new experience,
Learning to control delerience.
My inner being thirsts
For a gift labeled a curse.
I want to break these chains,
Be more than insane.
I want to be free
To be the real me.
Every great individual
Has ideas that are sensational.
So say what you will,
I will have these spiritual spills,
That shakes where I dwell,
And brings me out of my shell.
I have the right to engage
With my mind, uncaged.
Hummingbirds die
If they are caged inside.

Hummingbirds,Hummingbirds, they fly flower to flower.
Hummingbirds,Hummingbirds, they got the power.
Hummingbirds,Hummingbirds, they're so sweet.
Hummingbirds,Hummingbirds, they are the bird to beat.
Hummingbirds,Hummingbirds, aren't they cool.
Hummingbirds,Hummingbirds, they're the best thing I've seen since that boy from middle school.
They are colorful and wonderful
and they might be a bird and might be small,
But inside I know they are very strong and tall.

The Perfect Pair

I lye in the grass observing the beauty around me.
Suddenly, I see a hummingbird fluttering from behind a tree.
It zooms right over me.
It begins to stick its beak into a flower.
A flower that seems to allow access to its sweet treasure.
So perfectly.
This amazes me.
A perfect pair.
Hopefully, one day I will also be amazed when I find someone to make a perfect pair with me.

Allurement

by Ella age 12
(Centennial, CO)

It’s like a pedal on the wind, gliding through the air.
The colors flash past your eyes. They bring excitement and peace.
The flowers bear candy nectar for them, giving them a sweet treat.
Don't get too close or it will jet away, for its beauty and innocence is fragile.
The hummingbird brings beauty and happiness like no other.
This bird zips, whirls, and flashes right before our eyes.
Colors so vibrant, stunning and unreal fill our mind.
But this delicacy can't stay for long, its got places to be and more tasks to fulfill.
As the hummingbird darts away, you are shocked by what exquisiteness you have experienced.

the summertime hummingbird

by Sairah Amjad aged 12
(Glasgow)

As the flowers grow and the sun shines
The hummingbird flies in straight little lines
It flaps its wings and buzzes its beak
A hummingbird is, certainly unique

It flies around me as I lie in the sun
I play with it for a bit, oh what fun!
At springtime it likes to fly around me
Its so cute and sweet, nothing like a bee!

It is so small with its tiny wings
Oh, how I love to hear it sing!
It is so tiny and small
It has a sweet call.

It flies around the flowers
As they show their color
It looks so cute
so cute, I can't compute

The smallest bird, is the hummingbird
It is so nice, but can't say a word
I see only fuzz, I hear it buzz
It talks so loud, and looks like that cloud

Nature is so beautiful and wondrous,
It makes the world so tremendous
I hope it never leaves the Earth
For it gives us the hummingbird!

life fufilled

by Skyler Alvarez
(59 A Bradford Ave Mobile AL 36604)

I saw a baby humming bird dived upon by a snake
i ran outside
i held it in my hands
i held in my small hands all that it contained
yet it was much more than it was
i felt its
dying heart beats
dying breaths
dying wing beats
oh speckled green diamond
splashed with red
you and your brothers
tell me how
how does your small quivering mass contain
all of you
so many heart beats
so many wing beats
so many breathes
how could you contain or cope
whose fault was it you were to die
that you wandered into the lion's den
oh sparkling emerald sun wreathed in red
truly oh truly
though life be short
truly
you
have lived.

Through the Window and in the Trees

by Liv A Moore

As I look though the window, I gaze at a bird lurking high in a distant tree. It Looked as if it was staring back at me.

Now really you must understand you cant find a humming bird by demand. You must be patient and you must wait. Be too loud and you'll be too late.

I watched that humming bird fly from tree to tree then to the window to look at me. I just watched as at he suddenly flew away over the tops of trees. Then I woke up, Just a dream.....Or is it?

this is the hummingbird. they glide along the glistening streaming water.
the hummingbird trail is a trail to lead to a beautiful land of yellow and bright, neon sun flowers. with green, blue hummingbirds humming along the land of the flowers.
they all wait for the season of fall to watch the green and light brown leaves, fall on to the streaming water.

Spring is here, let's celebrate
by looking at the sky.
Many hummingbirds are at peace
and all of them can fly.

Let's cheer for spring today because
the hummingbirds have come,
The clouds are gone, the birds are here;
they make a nice light thrum.

Today's a good day, one I love,
Enjoy the day they arrive,
Each and every day this spring
the hummingbirds will thrive.

Dear Little Hummingbird,

by Caylin age 10
(Moorpark, CA)

Dear little hummingbird, where will you go? Perhaps flapping backwards, high and low? Dear brave hummingbird, where will you zoom? Maybe near a honking truck, with plenty of room. Dear curious hummingbird, where will you soar? Where, oh where? I'm begging for more! Alas, little hummingbird, you will not adventure. Instead you'll have babies, but only one will be a "her". And when your hatchlings grow up, they'll zoom and soar. Just like you did, but they'll beg for more.

The Iridescent Bird.......

by Libby (age 11)
(UK, Preston, Muchoole, Lancashire)

As the sunlight makes my colors bloom,
My iridescent feather wings flap back and forth,
In different angles.
I hover down to take a sip of nectar from the tubular flowers,
I don't hop or walk, i perch only,
And once more my wings are ready to fly again.
As i fly in a horizontal figure eight pattern,
I rise higher and higher,
I see the treetops swaying,
I make a call to say 'I am the Hummingbird!'

The smallest bird is the hummingbird,
Which was found during the birds occurred,
They are also very colorful,
Now you know the structural!

There are more than 330 different species
And all carry pollen,
Some hummingbirds would eat some kiwis!

Like other birds,
They also eat from bird feeders,
But they weigh only in milliliters!

Hummingbirds are the best,
The smallest as well,
They are quite fragile,
But they do travel!

Wings fluttering quicker then the eye can see,
the little humming bird searches for sweet nectar,
stopped at the flower,
thinking to it's self, is this the sweetest one?
I'm small but quick,
I stop I skip,
after reset I fly,
I fly 80 times per second,
I fly bye bye.

Hummingbirds help!

by Stephie

Hummingbirds humming
Drinking nectar,
So small and pretty
With their big beaks

They help our world
So we should appreciate them,
For all they do
And for all they have done

Their population is in great health
They migrate,
They are really a big help
All day

So they fly with their wings so calmly
And they help our world,
Appreciate them more
And life will be better and more peaceful

Day and night you hear their sweet hums
Promising to soothe every sobbing heart
Less than a penny it weighs
But makes me lovely days
It sieves the pain and leaves me joy
Sadness may play my heart like a ramming toy
But the hummingbird makes me forget all
For only I wish I was a doll
As the hummingbird rows tall
To all the hummingbirds
Who day and night hum
Oh sweet hummingbird

A hummingbirds Delicate Beauty.

by Jessica Bilsborough
(England)

Hummingbirds are not quite what they seem.
Happy, gentle, carm and as brave as can be.
Joyful, delightful, fascinating too.
There beauty is everywhere to be seen.
Small colorful birds with iridescent feathers.
Flapping the wings and humming in thy air.
A small, and tiny musical musician.
Bright and beautiful colors like a rose.
As they travel through the sky.
Un aware they Naturally flow by.
They are floating free of time.
Carrying out people's hopes and dreams.
There ability is fascinating.
But when adapted to their life style
Brilliant.

by Wei Shiow Fong
(Vestavia, AL, USA)

As I sat in the grass,
Waiting for nothing,
I began to weave a basket.
So passed the day,
Uneventful, until I saw it.
The perfect bird, so fast
I could barely keep track.
It hovered here, then
buzzed there, fluttering fast,
never stopping as it sipped
its afternoon nectar, as
I called it.
I watched in wonder as
It sailed past me,
playing chase with the wind,
always winning, its
colors shimmering in the sun.
Blues, greens, aquas of every
shade imaginable.
Seeing the bird made me think.
It was a hummingbird, I knew.
I wondered how to describe
it when I got home.
It was perfect, reality,
wonder, a brush with nature.
Then I hit the perfect word.
The hummingbird, the rarity,
was inspiration itself.

Life as a Hummingbird

by Gabriel 13

I find my life to be a fast paced one
Being a small bird means nothing
I can flap my wings pretty fast
Flying around looking for the sweet nectar of plants
I might be small
But I can live a long life
People have developed myths about me
The fast flapping of my wings creates an almost humming sound
I have the fastest metabolism of all animals
Being characterized as a small bird is only a label
My wings can flap pretty fast
For reproduction we males don’t take part
Our nests are about the size of a walnut
We come in different colors and live in different parts of the world
We migrate to Mexico and Central America when the weather gets cold
That’s pretty much it
Being a hummingbird you’re pretty tiny
Love to drink nectar
And you fly pretty fast due to your constantly flapping wings

If i was a bird

by Megan
(United Kingdom)

If I was a bird

Someone once asked me a question,

If I was a bird what would I be?

I replied to them, I would be a humming bird you see

My wings would hum along every time I fly

I’m too fast even for the cat’s eye!

My wings would flap at least fifty times a second

I would be with you as soon as I was beckoned

I could fly frontwards backward and even upside down

My feathers would almost look as if I wear a colorful gown

I eat flower nectar because I’m not a very good packet reader

but nothing makes me happier then when I’m eating from my recycled bottle feeder!

Humming Little Hummingbird

by Ananya, 10
(Plainsboro, NJ)

Hovering above me,
can’t you see?
A Hummingbird bright as can be.
Humming it’s little song,
as it drinks the sweet nectar,
it rests,
then soars over the California Shores
right into the sunset,
where it belongs.
