Fall Migration Map
2021

Our Hummingbird Fall Migration Map 2022
is now Live!

See it here.

The Fall migration is a journey south back to Mexico and Central America and starts when the abundance of insects (their main food source) starts to dwindle with cold temps.

The migration usually starts in August in the far north and will vary according to the state or province you live in and the species of hummingbirds you will see. They tend to gather in some southern states because by chance they arrive at the same time. It is not because they travel in flocks.

However, not all hummingbirds migrate each year. Some will spend the Winter along the western coast of North America.

Hummingbirds travel from their Summer homes in North America to a warmer Winter climate escaping the harsh weather in the north. During the migration some of us will see a huge influx in the hummingbird population at their feeders.

During the Fall Migration hummingbirds engage in a "Feeding Fury" to store energy as fat to power their way south. This is a good time to help by hanging extra feeders to provide much needed accommodations for their long journey.

Here is a "Feeding Frenzy" recorded and contributed
by Sam Ruffner in Cataula, Georgia during the Fall Migration.

HUMMINGBIRD MIGRATION
FALL 2021
MAP SUBMISSION FORM

 NOTE

Fill out the form below to share "your LAST sighting of Fall 2021".

Those, who are south of you and anxiously awaiting the Fall arrivals, will be able to track them through your posts when they are getting close.

Please try to estimate the LAST time you had a hummingbird visit your feeder(s).

Please DO NOT submit random sightings, it will not help anyone. We are looking for the LAST visits to your feeder(s) for the season.

If you see hummingbirds at your feeders everyday and do not see as many or no visitors for 2 days, they have probably left for the season. At this point, submit that last day you had hummingbirds visit your feeders.

HINT: Some of our visitors who have a good idea of the last visit to their feeders from year to year and know it is getting close to their departure, will write down the date each day or mark a calendar with a sighting until there are no more.

NOTE: You will not see your submission immediately on the map below, your sighting submissions will be periodically updated throughout the day.

Please submit just ONE sighting.......
(Your VERY LAST Sighting of 2021).

PROCESS FOR REPORTING A FALL MIGRATION SIGHTING:

  1. Observe hummingbirds at your feeders each day
  2. You don't see any visitors for 2 (two) days to your feeders
  3. Report the LAST date you had hummingbirds at your feeders
